Polarity Therapy has been around since the mid-20th Century. It offers treatment using the body’s energy as well as a combination of diet, exercise, self-awareness and other factors. The body’s ailments are diagnosed through verbal means as well as touch. This therapy is thought to aid stress reduction, relief of migraine headaches, allergies, digestive disorders, PMS symptoms, body pain and fatigue. It has also reportedly helped with pregnancy and post-natal care.
Qi Gong, at times spelled Chi Kung, a Chinese method of healing that has been around for 2,000 years, is a mix of exercise and the cultivation of qi energies. The discipling of the body plays a key role, and there are exercises to help regulate the body (posture), mind (through relaxation) and the breath. There are moving and still variations. Apart from curing illness, its benefits are accepted to include a stronger body, including the diaphragm and cardiovascular system, a more effective central nervous system and cerebral cortex, better synchronization of the brain waves, expanded lung capacity and a more effective immune system.
Then, there’s good old-fashioned prayer. Prayer can be done in a group or by oneself. It can be practiced even when the person being prayed for has no knowledge of such. Nu- merous studies have been done to verify the effectiveness of prayer. It can help with the health and well-being of the person being prayed for – but it also brings a sense of peace to the person praying.

Research into energy healing

In an effort to incorporate Western sciences’ need for physical proof, studies have been performed on the impact of energy healing on living, isolated cells as opposed to human subjects. Many of the studies on isolated cells are inadequately controlled, are published as incomplete reports, or are published in non-reviewed journals. Thus, while existing evidence provides enough positive indications to warrant further investigation, there is a great need for more rigorous studies from experienced investigators.
Of 23 clinical trials involving energy healing that did meet a rigorous criteria requiring adequate design, control and review procedures, 57 percent have shown a beneficial effect. This caused authors reviewing the studies to conclude that the “evidence thus far merits further study.”
Indeed there is growing interest and evidence for alternative health exploration based on a “life force,” wholeness, and interconnections. The National Institutes of Health has established a Cen– ter that is devoted to research in the area of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The budget is growing rapidly and research into areas such as energy healing and prayer is being encouraged. Several large clinical trials, especially on the effects of prayer, are now underway in major academ– ic institutions across the country. Through science, researchers eventually hope to better under– stand how energy healing practices may be incorporated into Western medical practices.
